    Private guided holiday
A simply outstanding guided hiking tour of both the Orkney and Shetland Islands! The whole tour was well-designed and terrifically executed. We were blessed to have Alastair Ewen as our guide. His deep connections with the area (having growth up on Shetland’s mainland), abundant interest in the history, archeology, flora and fauna of the areas we visited and desire to meet/exceed our expectations made this one of the most special travel experiences of my / our lifetime. I’m so glad we did this, and look forward to coming back, perhaps to tour Skye. Thank-you so much!!

My first trip with Argyll and it ended up as a private tour. Nevertheless, I had the most memorable and amazing walking holiday!! Scotland is definitely a country to explore on foot. I not only enjoyed every moment, but I found the history, geology and wildlife quite fascinating. It certainly enhanced my whole trip. My guide, Richard, deserves most of the credit for his knowledge, capabilities and excellent recommendations. Thank you Richard and Freida for a well planned trip! I can hardly wait for my next walking holiday (Shetland)!!

Everything about this trip was wonderful, I would thoroughly recommend About Argyll. The walks were beautiful, the group was full of nice people, the accommodation excellent, everything very well organized, and our guide, Nigel, exceptionally competent and friendly. I've already booked for next year!

Great holiday. Orkney has so much to do and see and we got round a lot of it, but left enough to encourage me to visit again. Stewart is a really knowledgeable and interesting guide. Good choice of places for evening meals too, with lots of local produce, seafood and Orkney beef.

    Shetland Islands
I have just returned from an extraordinary private walking tour inShetland with About Argyll: it was absolutely perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Firstly, the tour was brilliantly planned, meticulously focused on evey detail, starting from a really pleasant 12 hour voyage from Aberdeen to Lerwick. Ms. Frieda regularly got in touch with me by email, covering every aspect of the holiday. The tour included breathtaking views of cliff,s rocks and beaches, stunning bird colonies of gannets and puffins and impressive archeological sites. What struck me most was the awe-inspiring 2000 year old Broch on Mousa , in which storm petrels nest - What an incredible experience, seeing petrels going back to their nests, after spending a day at sea. Moreover, the accomodation in Scalloway was lovely and I could gorged myself on delicious packed lunches. The guide Nigel was absolutely brilliant, second to none, always showing first-class competence, in-depth knowledge , including history, flora and fauna, great passion and enthusiasm, allowing me to get to the heart of Shetland. All in all, I would definitely have another walking tour with About Argyll in the future.

I can't say enough about how amazing our trip was with About Argyll. You planned everything perfectly. From the gorgeous accommodations to the wide variety of fabulous meals. You even secured first class tickets for us on the Harry Potter Jacobite steam train! Our trip was memorable in every way. This was a very special time that my daughter and I had to spend together after her graduation and one we'll never forget.
Our guide Alastair was amazing. He made us feel at ease right from the start. We never had to worry about any of the details of our trip. He was so knowledgeable about everything in Scotland--the history, geology, culture, and landscape. I don't think we had a question he couldn't answer-- and believe me we had a lot! Every walking day was the right balance of challenging but fun. Alastair's lunchtime stories and reciting of Scottish fables were a daily treat. By the end of the trip we were very sad to part from our weeklong companion. We are so grateful for About Argyll and can't imagine having a better experience!

    Andrea Alvarado, USA

    Morar & Isle of Skye
Our tour was brand new, Morar and the Isle of Skye. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it for its beauty and peace. The places we visited are very remote and you might not find them on your own but well worth visiting. The accomadations were first rate and the food was excellent. Our guide Leslie enhanced our hikes with her knowledge of the terrain and its history. For anyone wanting to get off the grid and unwind, this is your trip!

  16. 22 May 2016

    Tony Warren, Canada

    Islay, Jura & Colonsay
Our walk was arranged as a private tour, following the itinerary for the Islay, Colonsay and Jura walks. Everything was perfect, from the setting up of the tour, the accommodation on Islay, the food, the walks themselves, and, above all, our guide Nigel Scriven. The whole experience far exceeded our expectations.

  17. 29 October 2015

    Pauline, England

    Orkney Islands
An excellent holiday with a knowledgeable guide and friendly group. The groups are never more than eight in number so accessing smaller sites never seemed overwhelming.

    The Best of Argyll
This was our first walking tour so we weren't quite sure what to expect. From start to finish the trip was fabulous. Very well organized, our guide Nigel's knowledge of the trails, birds and history really added to the enjoyment of the hikes and the variety of trails made each day a little different. Highly recommended.

    Discovering South-Argyll
Very good, professional service. From pick-up to drop-off and everything in between. And real thought given to what worked best for our group given our relatively short tour - 2 days. Much welcomed flexibility. Great guide and excellent company too. One suggestion - give him a Mike as his first class insight wasn't always audible in the back of the minivan!

  20. 29 July 2015

    Angela Ford-Rosenthal, Canada

    The Best of Argyll
Excellent trip, the walks were all good, and the guide was very well-informed and flexible. Would recommend this company to others.

really excellent. The sites exceeded expectations. The walking was great and everything from hen harriers to Scottish primroses were a real treat. Brilliant guide and good company. wont forget the 'Norse king' on Rousay in a hurry either!

    The Best of Argyll
The best holiday I have had in years.
A lot of beautiful sites during varied walks.
Very good guide who knows a lot and is very good with people.
    Lovely guesthouse and good service!

  23. 5 July 2015

    YC Seah, Singapore

    South-west Highlands & Islands
    The trip was perfect.

Frieda was a great organiser - I had to leave the trip early, and she made all the necessary arrangements for me, including logistics to Glasgow.

Our guide was Lesley, who was experienced, patient and caring.

The only suggestion that I would like to make is to increase the amount of walking per day. Average of 10km per day wasn't quite enough! =)

I look forward to my next holiday with aboutargyll.

    Nancy Gelb, USA

Highland Perthshire, Argyll & the Isles
In September 2014 my friend and I left our husbands in the States and went on the stunning walking holiday offered by About Argyll Walking Holidays. From the moment we met Frieda the owner and Lesley our tour guide we began the holiday that went well over our expectations in every way. The hikes were varied (through the forests in the Loch Tay area and along the coast near Oban and the nearby islands) with a delightful visit to Glen Coe on the day we traveled from the inland to the coast. The hikes were all very 'doable' in length and terrain with stunning views. Both if the inns were first class accommodations with remarkable food and ambiance. Lesley's knowledge of the history, natural history and geology of Scotland further enhanced our experience. This holiday gets my highest recommendation.

    The Best of Argyll
What a wonderful, informative trip. Our hikes were varied and so interesting. Our guide Stewart provided us with a wealth of information regarding Scottish history and customs. Couldn't have asked for a better leader. Our knowledge of Scotland has greatly increased due to this trip. One of our best hiking vacations!

  27. 25 September 2014

    Nancy Gelb, USA

Highland Perthshire, Argyll & the Isles
This tour is one of my favorites. Our walking guide Lesley's knowledge of history, geology, archeology and nature on our walks added so much to our enjoyment of this 'wee bit' of Scotland. We wish we'd had more time. The walks chosen took us thru old forests, a nature reserve, castles and coastal trails and tracks. Each day was a new adventure. Well done and highly recommended!

    Orkney Islands
We scheduled this trip for our 45th wedding anniversary and it was a perfect way to celebrate. Orkney has such a sense of millennia of history in its geology and human occupation. The trip was a wonder-full exploration of these aspects of the land, expertly guided and without rigidity...John was open to suggestions for side ventures if time and the ferries permitted. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

    Islay, Jura & Colonsay
I was a bit nervous when I signed up for my second walking tour with About Argyll because I did not think it was possible for the second to equal the excellence of the first. In reality, though, the second was even better. The scenery incredibly beautiful, and every day was truly glorious. The tour was well organized, and our guide, Alastair, was skillful, knowledgeable, and attentive to our needs and abilities. Accommodations at Lyrabus Croft were comfortable, and the food was ample and delicious. I am very, very glad I returned. Thank you for another perfect holiday!

  32. 18 July 2014

    Willy Vangeel, Belgium

    Islay, Jura & Colonsay
Scotland has as many faces as it has whisky's, so there is a lot more to explore. This trip was wonderful, with many different landscapes and things to visit. And... in total I did already 50 walking days in Scotland with only 4 days (a bit of) rain. I'm now already looking forward to my next visit.

Even my sixth walking holiday with About Argyll was one with many 'whaaws' and 'Oh's' . The organisation and guiding are perfect and Scotland is a great land to discover, so I keep coming back for more !!!

    The Best of Argyll
About Argyll has been the best possible introduction to Scotland for me. A very well organized trip in all respects. Lesley has been an extraordinary guide. She has made a great choice of walks, excellent choice of accommodation, and has given very enlightening answers to the most unexpected questions about nature, history, everyday life and all sorts of topics. She is enthusiastic, kind and caring and has brought good feelings in the group from the start. Fantastic landscape and friendly people everywhere. Most enjoyable. I look forward to having another holiday with About Argyll.

Do you want nature's best? Travel with About Argyll and you will see the beauty of Scotland! Our trip to the Orkney's was super: wonderful walks, great archeological sites and an excellent guide who knows all about Scottish history and is very considerate also. We also stayed in a fine B&B, with caring hosts! After a nice long walk it is so good to come 'home' to a comfortable guesthouse. I am looking forward to my next trip with About Argyll!

As holidays go, this was among the very best. Nigel was an excellent guide. My fellow travelers were delightful companions. The accommodations at Thornloe and Lyrabus Moor Croft Guesthouse were comfortable; the hosts were charming; and the meals were outstanding. The Highlands and Islands tour was magnificent -- every day there was something amazingly beautiful to see. Scotland truly is a gorgeous county, and I am glad I experienced it through this particular walking tour.

Great organization made this fascinating trip an easy experience. Our guide Nigel, provided excellent explanations to all questions related to history, flora, fauna, and locations. All accommodations were comfortable with friendly hosts in clean, delightful settings. The food was always plentiful and delicious. Our trekking was well paced covering a variety of settings featuring historic and natural areas of interest, and the small group (8 with guide) encourages good conversation. I absolutely recommend About Argyll Walking Holidays!

Vast openness, harmony of intact nature, silence to calm down – a week full of walking activities, Only a week, but a week with various weather situation. Enjoyable walking tours from the beginning until the end. It was certainly a dare for Alasdair to recognise all our different interests. We were a group who not could been more different. We were a sensational group with people of all ages but we all share one interest, walking in Scotland. I know I will come back

    Galloway & Argyll
I have just enjoyed a back to back trip with Nigel Scrivens in Galloway and Argyll followed by the Shetlands. Both trips were wonderful with amazing scenery and wildlife. Nigel is a great guide who shares his wealth of knowledge of the environment including flora and fauna. He recognises all bird song and is able to locate where they are perched. I have seen so many birds that would have been missed had it not been for his expertise. Great food was on offer in a variety of venues chosen by Nigel, always a good end to the walking day. About Argyll organises a fantastic itinerary which is flexible due to weather conditions and I would not hesitate to recommend them to future clients. I look forward to rebooking in the near future? Well done

    Shetland Islands
I have been on Argyll walking holidays twice (Exploring Mull and Shetland)and I would consider going with them again. I have been impressed by the professionalism and care both holidays have been organized and led. I have appreciated the variety of the walking programme and the quality of the B&Bs we stayed at. The places we have been taken to have been of a special beauty and hard to reach otherwise. We have also been lucky to have an unusual fine weather which made us feel that we have been blessed and enjoy the holiday even more.

I had a great time both on the walks and sampling the delicious food of the north. Well done to Alasdair for enabling us all to enjoy this wonderful area. A memorable holiday in the rain but a great time too.

    Exploring Mull
Although we got a lot of rain and strong wind, I have enjoyed the experience of climbing the hills in such a bad condition. I am thankful to Alasdair for the helping hand to reach the top. Without him I would not have made it. The group was very nice and we spent a good time in the local pubs. In do apologize for my poor English. Many greetings, Henriëtte Hendrix.
